Dear Cousin
You have in doubt thought me very remiss in not sending you the data promised on the genealogy of the Jones family. While visiting in Aurora something was always happening to prevent my writing.

The yellow fever scare hastened my return home but I only succeeded in reaching St. Louis, as quarantine regulations prevented passengers entering or leaving the South.
Wita and I have both had yellow fever as have no fear of it, but she could not return on account of the children. You saw so many new relations that you may not remember that Wita is my sister Mrs. Thomas. I was detained in St. Louis almost two months before being allowed to enter these parishes, which had been kept clear of fever.

Here in the parishes of Southwest Louisiana, the Opelousas and Fiche county is faithfully described in Longfellow’s Evangeline. I have been teaching in the family of Mr. Overton Cade, for over three years. It is a fertile and healthy country but monotomous and --y[?] The plantations of the English speaking people are very large and many of the owners are absentees so there is little society and that at uncomfortable distances. The rest of the country is owned and occupied by the descendants of the Acadians and just as Longfellow described them, they are today. Gentle, peaceful, not too industrious and as separated from their American neighbors as though they were sill in France. This is rare thing for me of them to speak or even understand English.

I am sorry I have no more definite information for you and that it was impossible for me to get dates and present addresses. If you have any information, I shall be greatly obliged to your for it. I should like at least the names, etc. of your family. I know you have but one child, a daughter, but I mean such of our common family as you have kept up with. Did you find the letter of inquiry addressed to your mother of which you spoke? You thought you ------[?] through it –ce[?] a book of the Jones genealogy, which it was evidently the intention of the writer of the letter to compile.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Niagara and that your trip home was a pleasant one. Aunt Maria frequently regretted the fact of the house being full which prevented her having you stay with her. After receiving treatment her health improved and her hearing returned as suddenly as it left her. Gra has been desperately ill since you saw her and is only now convalescing. They wrote me Uncle Aukland is thinner and paler than ever, if that could be possible. But Gra’s return to health will put new life in him. If you ever have any thoughts of coming to New Orleans, a letter addressed to me here or at Whitaker Miss, where mother lives or to Wita at Port Eads will cause us to make every effort to see you. Hoping to see you again some day and to hear from you before very long, my dear cousin,
Yours sincerely,
Cicile B. Jones
