Carolus Burch
     Carolus Horace Burch was born on 7 March 1813 at Venice, NY.. He was the son of Asa Burch II and Abigail Rose. He married Nancy Henrietta Jones, daughter of Roger Jones and Aseneth Denison, on 25 September 1834 at Venice, NY.. He was elected Corporal of a Company, 13th Regiment, 5th Brigade, 3rd Division of Cavalry, New York Militia on 10 September 1838.9 He and Nancy Henrietta Jones migrated to Marshall, MI. in 1846, and then to Battle Creek, MI. in 1848. He lived in 1852; was the first to use mill rebuilt by Ellery Hicks. He was a farmer and cabinet maker. He made the spinning wheel that Lucile Kimbal had. He was a charter member of Pennfield Farmer's Grange in 1873. He died on 4 August 1890 at Battle Creek, MI., at age 77. He was buried at Hicks Cemetery, Pennfield Twp, Calhoun Co, MI..10

     Nancy Henrietta Jones was born on 17 April 1807 at Berne, Albany Co, NY.. She was the daughter of Roger Jones and Aseneth Denison. After the death of her mother, in 1829, Nancy left Berne, NY. and travelled to Wilkes Barre, PA, and then Cayuga Co, NY, visiting relatives. She married the brother of her sister's husband, who lived in Cayuga Co. She married Carolus Horace Burch, son of Asa Burch II and Abigail Rose, on 25 September 1834 at Venice, NY.. She and Carolus Horace Burch migrated to Marshall, MI. in 1846, and then to Battle Creek, MI. in 1848. She held the mortgage of land of Byron H. Hicks. When she died, the income was willed to her husband. After Carolus died, their children received the income.8 She died on 20 July 1886 at Battle Creek, MI., at age 79. She was buried at Hicks Cemetery, Pennfield Twp, Calhoun Co, MI..9

Asa Burch II1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

     Asa Burch II was born on 3 July 1775. He was the son of Asa Burch and Hannah Chase. He married Abigail Rose, daughter of Wiat Rose and Maude Thankful Tanner, on 9 February 1792 at Stephentown, NY.. He hosted the first meetings of the First Baptist Church at Stephentown, at his house in 1795.9 He migrated to Cayuga Co, NY, and settled about one and half miles northwest of East Venice. He was a prosperus farmer, as indicated by the inventory of his Estate in 1801.10,11 He served in the War of 1812, from August 1812 to January 1813. He was a Captain in charge of a company of a detached militia, 19 NY Regiment, serving at Manchester, Niagara. Capt Burch seved under Col. Henry Bloom and Col. Hugh W. Dobbins.12 He died on 3 November 1854 at Venice, NY., at age 79. He was buried at East Venice Cemetery, Cayuga Co, NY..13


Asa Burch Jr.'s parents and his birth and marriage dates were written in a family record. In August 1890, Thankful Oleva Jones, his youngest daughter transcribed the entire record and sent to her niece Abigail Flagg, who was the family genealogist. I have a copy of that 1890 letter. Lucile Kimball of San Luis Obispo, CA. had the original letter.

     Roger Jones was born on 3 December 1756 at Stonington, CT.. He was the son of Henry Jones and Eunice Minor. He served during the Revolutionary War. He was a fifer on a payroll of Capt. Denison's Company of Militia in the 4th Regiment under the command of Col. Killian Van Rensselaer in quelling an insurection in the north east part of Manor Rensselaerwick, New York in April 1777.7 He married Hannah Case circa 1780. He was one of the first members of the Baptist Church of Christ in 1783 at Berlin, NY..8 He was an ensign in Peter Van Rensselaer's Regiment in 1788 at Albany Co, NY..9 He married Aseneth Denison, daughter of Daniel Denison II and Catherine Avery.
